CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE POEM “TEXT” BY CAROL ANN DUFFY

The poem “Text” is written by Carol Ann Duffy. She was born on 23 December 1955. The poem ‘Text’ was taken from the “Rapture” collection published in 2005. She is the first poet to open up about the fact “LGBTQ” and she, herself is a bisexual poet and has written many novels and poems about feminism, sexuality, and notions of gender.

In the poem ‘Text’, Duffy talks about the modern generations where people are getting advanced day by day and introducing many communication ideas with the help of technology and evolution of it, and one such evolution of technology is the “mobile phone”. And Duffy says that with the innovation of the ‘mobile phone people are getting detached from their families and their loved ones, which indicates the state of people who are losing interest in the real world and also getting involved in something which is just a waste of time. Here, in the poem “Text” Duffy says that people take care of their mobile phones more than their pets, i.e., “like an injured bird” where people provide protection to the mobile phone but not to their pets, so we can see that people are losing their feelings for any kind of relationships but they adore their phone the most. Poet also emphasizes the word ‘Text’ in the poem, to make us understand that texting has become a great part of our life. We are getting more dependent on it and the saddest thing is, we are getting so habituated to the texting process, that we have not even seen, the changes that are changing within us suddenly. Poets also say that texting has also brought some negative aspects with it, as people are getting feelingless day by day as texting does not bring feelings with it, as we don’t know how the person is exactly feeling while typing but just try to imagine it but fails in the process of imagining it. People ‘type’ or ‘text’ like a ‘broken chord’ i.e., in code languages which even sometimes get impossible to understand what that person exactly means to say. And even if we try to picture the situation we can’t as everything becomes blurred in front of us, as if it is trying to make us understand that we are losing human relationships and entering into the world of technology which is without feelings, care, and love.

So, as being from this modern or evolved society/generations we should try to maintain human relationships and feel the emotions of the people, who are our loved ones i.e., our family and friends, by sitting and talking to them. Rather, than just always typing and talking to the person who doesn’t even care about us, like the button or word which we are typing is unheard by everyone, will never be heard by anyone. Also, with the innovation of this mobile phone people are getting more depression, anxiety, and loneliness as their feelings remain unheard by everyone and that is never disclosed to anyone that remains between the sender and the receiver, which creates a great impact on the upcoming generations as they will be the victim of this mobile phone. And may lead a depressive and lonely life. These may be a risk to their life because as the days are passing, human relationships are degrading. So, at the end of the day, there will be no one to share their feelings with.

So, from my point of view, we can say that the generation is growing and new technologies are coming, we too should get evolved with it. But also, we should takeout our time to spend it with our family and our loved ones. To maintain human relationships and happy surroundings to be with them in their good and bad times.
