  • It got published in the collection “RAPTURE”
  • It contains an iambic diameter and trimeter
  • It contains 7 paras with 2 lines in each

THEME

  • It talks about the modern technology of communication – TEXT
  • Loss of human relationship

SUMMARY

  • I TEND THE MOBILE NOW”

LIKE AN INJURED BIRD.”

In this stanza, we can see that we are so attached to our mobile phones that we tend to take care of them as we will do to an “injured bird” (here simile has been used to indicate the attachment of the human beings to their mobile phone). People are taking care of their mobile phones more than they take care of their living pets. Maybe, sometimes we get irritated or forget to provide proper care and protection to the pets but we never fail to adore our mobile like a baby and provide it with all sorts of care and protection.

  • WE TEXT, TEXT, TEXT

OUR SIGNIFICANT WORDS.”

In these lines, Carol had given the emphasis on the word “text” and used it in the form of alliteration as texting had become an integral part of our life. Here “significant word” indicates the “insignificant words” that we text throughout the day, which are meaningless but still we text everything as we are getting habituated to it without even knowing it.

  • “I RE-READ YOUR FIRST

YOUR SECOND, YOUR THIRD,”

LOOK FOR YOUR SMALL XX,

FEELING ABSURD.”

In the 3rd and 4th stanzas, Carol said that we re-read the text, a number of times, 1st time, 2nd time, 3rd time just to look for the “small xx”. ‘SMALL XX’ were used by the English people at the end of their letters to indicate – love, care and affection from the sender to the receiver. But now, they cannot find it in the ‘text’. We feel that in the process of texting, we are getting emotionless and can say a ‘loss of human relationship’ have been started. As we cannot find love, care and affection in the process of text which leads us to feel absurd.

  • “THE CODES WE SEND

ARRIVE WITH THE BROKEN CHORD.”

In this para, the poet talks about the code language, people use nowadays while texting. As it brings no feeling and love with it but only words. Also “broken chord (broken musical instrument)” indicates the lifeless meaning of communication with no harmony, no melody, no nothing with humans in real life i.e., a loss of human emotions can be seen.

  • “I TRY TO PICTURE YOUR HANDS,

THEIR IMAGE IS BLURRED.

In this para, the poets talk about the blurred images of the hands of the sender, where we can say that while the sender is sending the text, the receiver is trying to imagine the hands of the sender but fails. As they cannot imagine it, as the image gets blurred. Here ‘blurred’ indicates the blurred relationship of humans, as nowadays people just text and show no real emotions. We cannot see the emotions and start questioning ourselves whether the person who is texting is really believable or not.

  • “NOTHING MY THUMBS PRESS

WILL EVER BE HEARD.”

In the last para, the poet talks about the texting process where we can see the loss of sound relationships. As the people text and press the buttons with their thumbs, the text/message remains between the sender and receiver only. So even if someone is heartbroken, depressed or has any feelings/emotions towards anyone will never get understood in real life but surely stay back in one’s life forever and life gets miserable for them as they cannot share it out with anyone. So, we can see the loss of emotions, human touch and sound relationships altogether.

CONCLUSION

  • Maybe technologies had brought development with it but still somewhere it is lacking behind as one of the technologies “mobile phone” had created a lot of progress but somewhere deep down we all know that; the world is getting emotionless.
  • People had started showing fake emotions to communicate and most of the people are depressed because of it. So, try to spend more time with family and friends physical rather than always being busy with the “TEXT”.
  • Try to share your real feelings and views rather than just pretending.
